In 1952, our family vacationed in Beirut. We stayed at the Normandie Hotel. Roger was the owner/manager. Little did I know the following year I would be enrolled at the American Community School (ACS) of Beirut. This kindergarten through high school and the American University of Beirut (AUB) were drawing cards to American expatriates. Most Americans from ARAMCO, however, came to Beirut for relaxation, the night life, medical attention, or a taste of moderate, western life in the Middle East. Unfortunately the war destroyed this area; hence the photographs. (rcc)

Hotel Normandie View
This view to the northwest is where night clubs could be found. Nearby were the Kit Kat, the Dugout, and the Lido. The Hotel St. Gorges was just beyond this scene.

Hotel Normandie View
Ships, motor boats towing water skiers, sailboats, passenger liners frequently enhanced the view north.

Hotel Normandie View
This view looks northeast toward the harbor. We used this hotel as our family's base while on vacation in Beirut. As a student, I went to the hotel frequently.

Beirut Street Business
The Lebanese are great for eating off the street. Vendors were advantageously placed. So were the shoe shine boys. In this scene a shoe shine boy orders from a vendor.

Hotel Normandie View
This view is due north from the hotel. Notice the contrast between methods of transportation. This corniche wound along the waterfront intermittently.

Hotel Normandie View
This view looks northeast but lower, through the memorial on the little plaza.

The ACS Boarding Department
Norman Gray and Kenny Lebsock, both ARAMCO dependent students from Dhahran head for town. Leslie Stevenson can be seen to the right. (October 1953)

BD New Wing Room
The author and David Stone roomed together until Dave got hepatitis and dropped out of school. Bob Lowenthal followed Dave. Through the window can be seen a small building that ACS rented out. The wall beyond separated ACS from Prep. Bernie Braun used to shoot lizards off this wall with his pellet gun.

The Beirut Airport Terminal
For most American students from ARAMCO, this is where your student life in Lebanon began. It it was a wonderful beginning as well.
